A Wintry Advent Calendar

When these new Shadow Box Drawers were released by Kaisercraft, I was determined to make one up as an Advent Calendar. I love the little central section and decided I wanted to make a little wintry scene in it and wanted to make the whole calendar feel more wintry than Christmas themed, if that makes sense.

Shadow Box Drawers

Most of the Kaisercraft Christmas Collections are feature the traditional colours of Red & Green so I picked papers from two of the collections to give me the colour scheme and effect I was after. I chose papers from the Just Believe Collection and the Turtle Dove Collection.

I started by painting the MDF parts with Kaisercolour Soft Moss. You don’t need to paint any bits that will be covered with paper, so on some of the sections you only need to paint the edges (this saves time and paint). I also painted the inside of the little boxes to match.

I love all the very traditional images on the ‘Maids’ paper from the Turtle Dove Collection. I picked the images that matched my colour scheme, so just used the little squares that were mainly blue in colour. I did have to use three sheets because of this though, but that was my choice. I also used on every other box the ‘Starlight’ paper reverse from the ‘Just Believe’ Collection.

Please see our previous Advent Calendar post for details of how we assembled the little square boxes.

I consciously arranged what papers went where on the boxes, I don’t do random lol. For the central section of the Calendar I used part of the ‘Drummers’ paper from the ‘Turtle Dove’ Collection, there is a little image on the reverse that was perfect for my wintry scheme. I also used the larger tree from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Woodlands set and the Kaisercraft Wood flourish ‘Iron Fence’. For my snow I used Cotton wool covered in Clear Rock Candy Distress Stickles, this gave a great frosty feel to it. I also covered the tree in Kaisercraft ‘Ice Blue’ Rhinestones and added some to the front of some of the boxes. To finish off the edges of the little drawers and the advent Calendar I used the Ranger ‘Pearl’ Dabber. The last thing I did was to add tiny numbers to each of the boxes – for this I used a little section from the ‘Wish List’ paper from the Just Believe collection.

I am really pleased with my Advent Calendar and the wintry feel to it – I hope you like it too. Now I just to fill the little drawers with chocolates 😀

All your comments are very much appreciated.

Layouts & Photos from November Crop

Many thanks to the scrappers who made our November crop so much fun. We hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as we did.

The kit for November was based on the Just Believe collection from Kaisercraft and included instructions and stash to make two festive themed layouts that we called “Joy” and “Christmas Memories” although some scrappers came up with their own interpretations of the layouts.

Joy layout using the Kaisercraft Just Believe collectionChristmas Memories layout using the Kaisercraft Just Believe collectionWe hope everyone enjoyed the Merly Impressions shop as well – the Christmas collections (including Just Believe) were very popular as was the recently released Pickled Pear collection.

We hope to see you all again for our next crop on the 26th of January 2013 (not the usual third Saturday of the month but as close as we could manage).

Below are some pictures taken today (click the image once to open it and click it again to close it).

November Crop – Layout Preview

The Merly Impressions November  Crop is nearly upon us so we thought we would let everyone know about the kit our croppers will be using on Saturday 17th November.

The kit uses the Kaisercraft collection called Just Believe which features versatile colours and patterns – a Christmas collection but it is also ideal for snowy, frosty or winter themed layouts.   The crop kit includes a total of eight sheets of printed paper, three sheets of Kaiser cardstock, two Boutique Buttons (designed by Morag Cutts), cotton and some berry embellishments.

The theme for the two layouts is Christmas, the layouts are called ‘Christmas Memories’ & ‘Joy’ but you can adapt your layouts and titles to suit your own photo’s.

The first layout which I have called ‘Christmas Memories’ uses one photo measuring 10cm wide by about 10cm high. I have used a colour photo but you could also use a black & white or sepia photo. The colours in this layout are mainly green and deep red, very traditional Christmas colours.

Christmas Memories layoutThe second layout which I have called ‘Joy’ uses one photo measuring 9cm wide by 11cm high. I have used a coloured photo again, the colours in this layout are mainly pale, frosty blues/greys and a touch of red.

Joy LayoutYou are obviously free to alter the title (and therefore the theme) of the layouts and you can also add journaling. I have also used a punch set and the Sew Easy tool which will be available to use on the day. We will also bring our usual supply of tools, the Cricut Expression machine, Grand Calibur and Big Shot to the crop if people would like to use it to create their own title or cut out other embellishments. Other items used on the layouts which you need to bring are a sewing needle if you want to do the sewing, Crystal Lacquer, a journal pen a green & pale Blue ink pad for inking round the edges. We will also have ink pads and Crystal Lacquer available to purchase on the day if you don’t have them. You will also need to bring a small pair of scissors because there is a little delicate cutting out on both of the layouts.

We will post full images and close-ups of the layouts after the November crop.

The kit will cost £10 on the day but is entirely optional and your seat is £5.00. The location of the crop, together with other details, can be found on our Crop Dates page.

There will also be the usual FABULOUS Merly Shop and for the Christmas themed November Crop we will supply gorgeous mince pies, Sausage Rolls and the usual muffins, choccies and biscuits, tea & coffee. Please bring your own lunch.

See you all next week,

Christmas Cheer

Hello!!  Emma here, and I’m back with my second card and a layout, using some more of the gorgeous Just Believe papers and embellishments, that I loved working with and know that you will too!! I hope you are inspired by my makes and I really look forward to hearing all your comments.

For my first share of today, I made this card which has a little secret message hidden away inside the smaller card on the front, (see picture below)!!

Firstly, I used some of the Kaisercard Robin Egg cardstock to cover the front of my card blank and then cut a piece of the Hymn 12 x 12 paper, cut to size and then distressed around the edge to give an aged look to the paper. I then used a small card blank and covered the inside and outside with the Starlight paper. I wrapped a piece of seam binding around the card blank and attached it to the front of my larger card.

I used some of the gorgeous snowflakes and messages from the Collectables pack to decorate the front and added one of the Mini Paper Blooms. On the inside of the hidden message card, I cut one of the messages from the Snowflake 12 x 12 paper and attached it.

As a finishing touch, I added pearls to the centre of the snowflakes and a decorative pin.

For my scrapbook layout, how could I not choose to use the fabulous Wishes Die Cut Sheet

I added my photo of Carnaby Street in 2009, which worked so well with the die cut messages, leaf flourishes and snowflakes from the Collectables pack. I also added some Snowflake Rosettes, die cut from the Magic 12 x 12 paper, using a Tim Holtz die. I added letters from the Just Believe Alpha Sticker Sheet and completed the layout with some further stickers from the Just Believe Sticker Sheet.

As a finishing touch to the layout, I added pearls to the centres of the die cut snowflakes and a decorative pin to hold the date message in place.

So, that’s it from me for this month and I really hope you like what I’ve created using the Just Believe collection.

Thank you for stopping by to take a look at my creations and I’ll see you all again, very soon!!

Bye for now…

Peace, Love and Joy

Hi everyone. It’s Emma here and I’m sharing my first post of November with you all, using the absolutely stunning “Just Believe” collection. When I saw a preview of this collection a couple of months ago, I just fell instantly in love with it…I actually think it is one of Kaisercraft’s best collections to date and I think it’s the most gorgeous collection I have worked with. Can you tell I love it??

Here’s my first card and as always, I hope you like it!!

To make this card I used a scalloped die cut circle and matted a circle of the Kaisercard Robin Egg cardstock and then layered that with a piece of the Starlight paper. I cut a smaller circle from a further piece of the Kaisercard and then matted it with a smaller circle, cut from a piece of the Hymn 12 x 12 paper and then distressed the edges of my papers and cards using Tim Holtz Distress Inks. I then used my Tim Holtz Snowflakes die to create the dimensional snowflakes from the 12 x 12 sheet of Magic paper and added these to the card, together with some of the gorgeous die cuts from the Collectables pack.

I cut some wording, “Joy, Peace and Love”, from the bottom of one of the 12 x 12 sheets of paper and added them to my snowflakes before finally tying some seam binding into a shabby bow and wrapping some of the Mini Paper Blooms around the bow, to complete my card.

So, I really hope I’ve given you some inspiration to start making some Christmas cards, if you haven’t started already and I’m sure, if you’re tempted by what you’ve seen, then you will love these papers and embellishments, just as much as I do!!

See you soon with another card using these papers.
