Layouts & Photos from September 2014 Crop

Many thanks to the scrappers who attended our September crop. We hope everyone enjoyed the day and the kit.

The kit for September was based on the Paradiso collection from Kaisercraft and included instructions and stash to make two layouts that we called “Today was…” and “Explore”.

The kit included six papers from the Paradiso collection, 16 Captured Moments Cards and other materials including a 12×2 Pocket Page which could be used to create an additional page from the leftover materials.

From this month we have decided to make the kit available on the Merly Impressions shop – it can be found in the Layout Kits section of the website.

It was a well attended crop and it was good to see so many familiar faces. We hope everyone enjoyed the Merly Impressions shop as well.

Many thanks to Paul for making the fabulous cakes – which didn’t quite last till lunchtime !

September 2014 Crop – Layout Preview

Hi everyone,

Here are the sneak peeks and details of the layouts for the Merly Impressions Crop on Saturday 13th September 2014.

The kit uses the lovely Kaisercraft collection “Paradiso” that features shades of oranges and images of tropical birds & flowers. Also in the kit which I have used are some of the coordinating “Getaway Captured Moments cards 3 x 4”. There is a little stamping involved and sewing, which is optional, the stamp I have used is the “CS155 Edges Stamp”. Anyone who attended the Retreat and had the Full Monty or BTP option will have this stamp, so please bring it along to use, otherwise there will be a stamp to use at the crop if you don’t have it as this is not included in the kit.

The first layout which I’ve called “Today Was″ uses two coloured photo’s measuring 9.5cm wide x 12.5cm high the other 9.5cm wide x 9.5cm high.

The second layout which I’ve called “Explore” uses one coloured photo measuring 9cm wide by 13cm high.

There will be a few of the Captured Moments cards left over & one paper, so I have included a Pocket Page in the kit for you to make up a third Project Life style layout if you want to (so maybe bring a selection of other photos).

Other items used on the layouts which you will need to bring are a journal pen, a brown & black ink pad, foam pads. You will also need an edge scrapper tool, a needle for sewing (if you want to do it) and a small pair of scissors because there is a little fussy cutting on both of the layouts. 😛

We will bring our usual supply of tools (the Cricut Expression machine, Grand Calibur, Big Shot, Martha Stewart punches Tim Holtz Dies etc) to the crop if people would like to use them to create their own title or cut out other embellishments.

We will post full images, photos and close-ups of the layouts after the crop.

The location of the crop, together with other details and future dates can be found on our Crop Dates page.

There will also be the usual FABULOUS Merly Impressions Shop where you can purchase all the latest Kaisercraft goodies. Merley & Paul will be making a selection of yummy cakes and we will also bring biscuits, chocolates, tea and coffee. Please bring your own lunch.

See you all on September 13th at 10am, we finish at 5pm. The cost of the kit is £12.00 and your seat is £5.00 payable on the day.

Project Life by Pam

I’ve succumbed! I know I’m a bit slow off the mark, but initially the Project Life style of scrapbooking didn’t appeal to me. I love the artiness of a 12″ x 12″. However, it seems that now my kids are grown up, that I’m scrapping about different things, and I can see how the Project Life style could work for me. In particular I can see how great this style of memory keeping will be for travel scrapping. So having bought an album and pages I thought I would dip my toe in the weather by scrapping some photos of my daughter’s recent trip down the coast of Australia. (I also bought her a Project Life kit for Christmas, so this layout hopefully will get her started also.)

I used the Paradiso collection for these pages. The collection, (like all the latest Kaisercraft collections) has some 6×4; and some 3X4 designs which are perfect for cutting down to use on Project Life layouts:

Sunsets - Paradiso Collection

Getaway - Paradiso Collection

In addition, the die cut Paradiso Collectables are perfect for embellishing as they lie very flat, (which is vital for fitting the cards into the pockets of the page protectors):

So, here’s my first page:

The great thing about using these double sided papers is that having completed one page, the reverse side is almost completed as well, and just requires the addition of some photos and embellishments.

So, here’s some close ups so you can see how I’ve layered the diecuts. On this one I’ve used a frame, and a flower embellishment.

And here, instead of using the pocket for another photo, I arranged some diecuts to make a pleasing embellished pocket collage.

For this pocket I added a photo, some word stickers and a die cut palm tree-simple!!

And for this one I layered some diecuts onto a journaling card. (I had to cut the side to fit it into the pocket though.)

And for this title  pocket I used some of the pop out diecuts from the Paradiso 6×6 patterned Paper Pad, and some of the letter stickers from the Paradiso Sticker Sheet. The ship card is one from the die cut collectables.

So if you are doing Project Life style scrapbooking, check out all the paper designs that Kaisercraft do, which all fit perfectly into the various pockets. Leave a comment so we can see how  you use Kaisercraft for your Project Life style pages!

Mixed Media Background Tutorial by Pam

I wonder how many of you have chosen ONE LITTLE WORD for 2014?  For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about One Little Word is a concept made popular in the scrapbooking world by Ali Edwards. The idea is to choose a word to live by which will make your life more rewarding. I’ve chosen ‘Connect’ as my word. I think sometimes I need to make more of an effort to connect with my family and friends, to connect with by body by eating better,  to connect with nature by getting out and walking more and to connect with myself through reflection and creativity.

As a little reminder of my word, I made this layout using the Paradiso collection from Kaisercraft. This is one of my all time favourite Kaisercraft collections. I love the colours, I love the retro feel, and I love the textures too. I thought I would enjoy getting a bit messy with this layout, and wanted to share with you how I created the background for this page.

1. Cut random strips of patterned paper from the collection and adhere to the background page. I wanted two distinct parts to the page as I knew I wanted to ‘connect’ them, so I lay my strips out as shown:

2. Using an old plastic card, or a spatula scrape gesso over the strips of paper. Allow to dry.

3. Lightly spray with water, then mists. Hold the paper vertically to allow the mists to run down the page in drips. Merly Impressions stocks Perfect Pearls Mists, and  Dylusions Spray Inks. See how you get some fine spray as well as those lovely runs of ink? Allow to dry.

4. Randomly stamp a background texture stamp over the page. I used the Kaisercraft Hessian clear stamp with Stazon Ink. Don’t be too fussy – you are after a random grungy look so ink up your stamp roughly and just dab it around the page.

5. Build up interest by adding more stamps, again randomly without undue care. Unfortunately the stamps I used are now retired, but I think the Decorative Tape Pieces Clear stamps would work fantastically well instead!

So, that’s it. After that it’s just a matter of layering up some more of those fabulous papers, Paradiso Collectables die cuts, lace trim and a title!!

I hope I have inspired you to create your own mixed media background paper.

A beach layout by Pam

Hi everyone,

This month I am lucky enough to get to play with the Paradiso collection from Kaisercraft. I cannot tell you how much I love this collection. It has a real retro feel, reminiscent of polaroid photos. The colours have that 1970s split tone look. The papers have patterned backs – and as much as I love the patterns,  I really wanted to challenge myself to use the picture side, instead. Fortunately I have the perfect photos to go with this collection. Last year my daughter Emily travelled around the rainforests and beaches of Northern Queensland, which is probably the inspiration for these papers.

The first thing I did was to stamp around where I was planning to place the photo using the Hessian texture stamp. Then, using a craft knife I cut around the outline of the bushes on the bottom left of the paper, and also along the sand at bottom of the page. This made a slit into which I could slip my photo. I glued the baker’s twine across the sky, and adhered the die cut banners.

Then I used other pieces from the Paradiso collectables – the flowers, palm trees, sign, and fronds, and layered them round my photo and other parts of the page. On the left hand side I adhered part of the Tropics Acetate sheet. This was adhered with silicone pop dots so it sits up a bit to give the illusion of depth.

I hope you like my Paradiso layout.
