A Wintry Advent Calendar

When these new Shadow Box Drawers were released by Kaisercraft, I was determined to make one up as an Advent Calendar. I love the little central section and decided I wanted to make a little wintry scene in it and wanted to make the whole calendar feel more wintry than Christmas themed, if that makes sense.

Shadow Box Drawers

Most of the Kaisercraft Christmas Collections are feature the traditional colours of Red & Green so I picked papers from two of the collections to give me the colour scheme and effect I was after. I chose papers from the Just Believe Collection and the Turtle Dove Collection.

I started by painting the MDF parts with Kaisercolour Soft Moss. You don’t need to paint any bits that will be covered with paper, so on some of the sections you only need to paint the edges (this saves time and paint). I also painted the inside of the little boxes to match.

I love all the very traditional images on the ‘Maids’ paper from the Turtle Dove Collection. I picked the images that matched my colour scheme, so just used the little squares that were mainly blue in colour. I did have to use three sheets because of this though, but that was my choice. I also used on every other box the ‘Starlight’ paper reverse from the ‘Just Believe’ Collection.

Please see our previous Advent Calendar post for details of how we assembled the little square boxes.

I consciously arranged what papers went where on the boxes, I don’t do random lol. For the central section of the Calendar I used part of the ‘Drummers’ paper from the ‘Turtle Dove’ Collection, there is a little image on the reverse that was perfect for my wintry scheme. I also used the larger tree from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Woodlands set and the Kaisercraft Wood flourish ‘Iron Fence’. For my snow I used Cotton wool covered in Clear Rock Candy Distress Stickles, this gave a great frosty feel to it. I also covered the tree in Kaisercraft ‘Ice Blue’ Rhinestones and added some to the front of some of the boxes. To finish off the edges of the little drawers and the advent Calendar I used the Ranger ‘Pearl’ Dabber. The last thing I did was to add tiny numbers to each of the boxes – for this I used a little section from the ‘Wish List’ paper from the Just Believe collection.

I am really pleased with my Advent Calendar and the wintry feel to it – I hope you like it too. Now I just to fill the little drawers with chocolates 😀

All your comments are very much appreciated.

December Daily

Ali Edwards started a December Daily journal a few years ago and I know many people have followed suit, documenting their daily lives during Christmas. I thought I might have a go this year.  Although I absolutely have no time during December, getting the journal ready now means that I might stand a chance of filling one in!

I constructed my book from scratch, but a ready made book will do the job too. I used an old Basic Grey chipboard album as a template to  lots of fancy shaped pages. The number sticker sheet is ideal for this as there are lots of different shaped numbers for each day.

I made good use of the 6 1/2″ paper pack – there a lots of gorgeous designs including foil designs. Also the collectables have heaps of tag shapes as well as images – ideal for your daily journal. There is also a whole sheet of gorgeous tags which I used throughout the book.

Christmas Morning

Of course Christmas is extra special for children. Waking up on Christmas morning to a sack full of presents! I remember many Christmas mornings from my childhood but unfortunately I don’t have any photos. So I do make an extra special effort to take photos and scrap Christmas so the kids have something to remember.

This stunning die-cut paper automatically gives your page a wow factor! I stamped the ornaments from the Turtle Dove stamps onto cardstock before embossing in gold. Carefully cut out and mount onto foam tape.  I connected them to my embellishments using Green Liquid Pearls.

Just try to keep an even spacing in between each dot. You may find it easier to place a grid ruler close by as a guide.

Arrange the die-cut collectables with some holly leaves and swirls before adding flowers. I added some texture paste over the top before sprinkling with glitter.

There is such a great selection of die-cuts and stickers with this collection. Just keep layering together to give lots of depth to the arrangement. Add more glitter and stickles for a lovely festive look.

I used two tones of blue ink on my wood flourish title. I then sealed it all in with Crackle Accents which I adore. The finish is super-glossy yet cracked to perfection!

New Turtle Dove!

Now the nights are drawing in and winter definitely feels like it is just around the corner, the time feels right for scrapping those wintry photographs.

I love the images throughout the Turtle Dove collection and this one kind of sums out the snowy fun enjoyed by our kids.

After cutting out a circle from the Swans paper, I placed Partridge behind it. I roughed up the edges of the paper and swiped some ink  around for definition.  To add some sparkle to the collectables, painted some texture paste along the branches before adding glitter.  The wood flourish was inked with Fired Brick and Aged Mahogany before being covered in Crackle Accents. This gives the title a totally gorgeous finish.

I layered up some die-cuts from the Collectables and flowers for a sweet accent as well as adding more glitter to the background paper. Incidentally, I created a snowflake stencil by punching a snowflake in some scrap card. I then spread texture paste through the stencil before adding glitter. This gave the whole background a lovely glittery accent.

Favourite Time of Year

Christmas is without doubt my favourite time of year. Not just because there are presents and lovely things to eat (but of course they are a BIG part of it!), but I love to get out those decorations that I’ve had for years.

We started visiting the Christmas German market in Birmingham a few years ago and Lauren wanted a nutcracker ornament. We decided between us that she should have a new one each year to start a collection. Her nutcrackers along with the other ornaments I have collected or made over the years really help to give home that festive look.

I cut out the big bow from the Golden Rings paper leaving a nice fancy edge. If you look closely, you can see that I added a scalloped edge to one side. Simply punch a scalloped border from Partridge. Snip along the straight edge every centimetre or so. Then carefully glue to the back of the way edge. You need a little patience but the results are worthwhile.

The Turtle Dove collectables are packed full of great images and pieces. I added a little sparkle and frosting to my ornaments. The Numbers sticker sheet has loads of numbers in different shapes – I used two for the year.

One technique I use frequently is to create a small area for my embellishments. I folded the corner down in my cardstock to allow me to place flowers and stickers behind. I start with the centre piece and work my way outwards. Leaves are great for filling in the gaps. Just finish off with some ribbon, stickers and die-cuts.

The title was inked in two colours before being covered in Glossy Accents. I just love the finish that it gives.

Our three Christmas collections feature a variety of different styles so, whatever type of project you are planning, there’s something for everyone.

This large collection features ten double-sided 12×12 papers as well as collectables, speciality papers, sticker sheets and much more. Included in this collection (and the other two new collections this month) is a perforated sheet of “To/From” tags.

Secondly, for a vintage Christmas look, we have the Twig & Berry collection – featuring vintage style patterns in shades of rich red and bottle green. Again, this collection features ten 12×12 double-sided papers, two sticker sheets, three speciality papers, collectables, rub-ons and a 6.5inch Paper Pad. This collection also includes two Clear Stamp sets including a set of festive flourishes.

Our third collection offers a modern Christmas look. The Mint Twist collection features funky modern designs in bright colours. This collection features nine 12×12 double-sided papers, two sticker sheets, speciality papers, collectables, rub-ons and a 6.5inch Paper Pad. This collection also features Epoxy Stickers and a fabulously bright Ribbon Pack.

Also this month we have 26 new Christmas themed Wood Flourishes including Baubles, Holly, Flourishes and Candy Canes. Most of the designs actually coordinate with elements in the three new collections so they extend the layout possibilities even more.

And of course we have lots of new Christmas themed Beyond-the-Page including Silhouette Wall Art and Standing Words. We also have three new types of Advent Calendar including a large (or should that be HUGE) Tree shaped Advent Calendar. See all the Advent Calendars in one place by clicking this link.
